Former UMC boss indicted

Former University Medical Center boss Lacy Thomas today was indicted on 10 counts of theft and misconduct by a public official.

Thomas was in the courtroom this morning and sat silent as a judge set bail at $500,000 and ordered him to be fingerprinted and processed today at the Clark County Detention Center.

Neither Thomas nor his attorney commented after the brief court proceeding.

Prosecutors estimate that UMC lost $10 million as a result of contracts that Lacy awarded to people who were unqualified to perform the work involved. According to prosecutors, Lacy awarded some of the contracts to friends and associates in Chicago, where he was formerly chief financial officer of Cook County Hospital.

Deputy District Attorney Scott Mitchell said the investigation is ongoing and that others may be prosecuted in the future.
