Babies get a lift from Newborns in Need

If you have things to donate or would like to volunteer, please contact the Southern Nevada Chapter of Newborns in Need.

In August 2008, newborns in Southern Nevada received a great start when a few ladies in Henderson formed the Southern Nevada Chapter of Newborns in Need.

Sandy Eady and Diane Short, who both crochet, said they had received an e-mail from Lion Brand yarn about crocheting items to donate to Newborns in Need. Sandy did some research, and the rest is history.

According to its Web site, “Newborns in Need, Inc. (NIN) is a 501(c)3 charity organized to take care of sick and needy babies and their families; and in cases of crisis, to help where help is needed.”

“There are so many babies out there who go home in just the hospital blanket,” said Eady.

In my mind, I had never fathomed this, because I always imagine a newborn baby going home to a brand new nursery full of everything a mom would need to care for her new child. The sad truth is that there are many families struggling, and now more than ever.

“This was eye-opening,” said Eady. “I had no idea.”

Monthly, the chapter holds meetings by going to hospitals and assessing the needs of newborns. They also receive information from hospital social workers and Catholic Charities.

The group supplies crocheted and knitted hats, blankets, and booties for both preemie and newborn babies who need them. And, in the worst of times, the group also knits and crochets dressing items for burials.

Since the chapter is still brand new, the group is still trying to get things off the ground. They plan on having a few fundraisers in the beginning of 2009 and they are also looking to apply for grants.

Volunteers are needed and always welcome.

In May, the Newborns in Need organization holds the “Biggest Baby Shower on the Planet,” across the country. Baby showers will be held throughout Henderson as well.
