High School Football Picks: Week 3

Democracy Prep Defeats Chaparral, 21-14

Steve Marcus

Chaparral running back Davon Williams (1) carries the ball against Democracy Prep during the second half of a high school football game at Chaparral High School Friday, Aug. 25, 2023.

It’s rivalry week for many high school football teams in Las Vegas.

And when it comes to rivalries, one stands out: The annual Bone Game between Las Vegas and Rancho is considered one of the most historic in the state — even if Las Vegas’ winning streak in the series is 25 years.

It’s not the lone rivalry on this week’s slate.

The Duel in the Desert between Cheyenne and Cimarron-Memorial has been around since both schools opened in 1991.

Additionally, Palo Verde plays Mojave in the Jersey Game, although the game isn’t contested every season.

The schools, which opened in 1996, play for a football jersey that is half Palo Verde, half Mojave. Palo Verde has never lost to Mojave.

Lastly, Foothill and Silverado will play in the Victory Bell game, which has been dormant in recent years. The game has been on and off since Foothill opened in 2001.

The picks column went 15-5 last week in improving to 25-6 on the season. Here is another week of games.

Valley at Boulder City

Props to Valley for beating Western last week. It will be tough for the Vikings to sustain the momentum after busing into Boulder City for the game. Boulder City 26, Valley 6

St. Louis Hawaii at Desert Pines

St. Louis is spending the week in Las Vegas after nearly beating Liberty last week. Expect another close game. Desert Pines 34, St. Louis 32

Campbell (Hawaii) at Liberty

Campbell could be the best team in Hawaii and has scored 171 points in three games. Campbell 49, Liberty 39

Miami Central at Bishop Gorman

The humidity of Miami has nothing on the dry heat of Las Vegas. Advantage Gorman. Gorman 38, Miami Central 19

Somerset Academy Losee at Flagstaff

The travel will be tough for Somerset to overcome in what appears to be an evenly matched game. Flagstaff 29, Somerset 23

Apple Valley (Calif.) at Arbor View

Breaking a rule in taking the Nevada team over the California school. Arbor View 19, Apple Valley 16

Green Valley at Sierra Canyon (Calif.)

Back to common logic: Take the California team over the Nevada foe. Sierra Canyon 42, Green Valley 12

Pahrump Valley at Del Sol

Anyone have a coin? Pahrump Valley 21, Del Sol 19

Canyon Springs at Legacy

Canyon Springs makes it three straight wins to open the season. Canyon Springs 20, Legacy 12

Silverado at Foothill

Silverado’s winning streak will eventually end. Just not this week. Silverado 30, Foothill 24

Rancho at Las Vegas

The Bone stays home. Las Vegas 41, Rancho 6

Virgin Valley at Sunrise Mountain

Gunner Cortez might be the best quarterback in the Class 3A. Virgin Valley 34, Sunrise Mountain 21

Centennial at Snow Canyon (Utah)

Snow Canyon beats Nevada teams in consecutive weeks. Snow Canyon 31, Centennial 19

Spring Valley at Perry (Arizona)

Spring Valley will have a hard time scoring with Perry. Perry 43, Spring Valley 23

Mojave at Palo Verde

Palo Verde has never lost to Mojave. Palo Verde 29, Mojave 11

Cheyenne at Cimarron-Memorial

This one won’t be decided until the fourth quarter. Cimarron-Memorial 27, Cheyenne 23

Sierra Vista feels it can compete for a state title. Sierra Vista 33, Clark 6

Coronado at Durango

Durango had great offensive balance in beating Desert Oasis last week. Durango 30, Coronado 25

Chaparral at Moapa Valley

Moapa Valley takes out its frustrations on my Cowboys. Moapa Valley 40, Chaparral 0

Shadow Ridge at Desert Oasis

The Shadow Ridge defense will give Desert Oasis fits. Shadow Ridge 32, Desert Oasis 9

Carson City at Basic

My new, favorite rule: Always take the Las Vegas team against anyone from Northern Nevada. Basic 31, Carson 16

Faith Lutheran at Reed

See above. Faith Lutheran 27, Reed 23

Eldorado at The Meadows

First time picking a game involving The Meadows. Eldorado 19, Meadows 14
