High School Football Picks: State championship games

Bishop Gorman Defeats Liberty, 56-14, in Southern Region Final

Bishop Gorman tight end Elija Lofton (9) celebrates after scoring a touchdown against Liberty during the Class 5A Southern Region final at Liberty High School in Henderson, Friday, Nov. 11, 2022.

Another high school football season is coming to an end in Nevada.

The predictions column, which went 5-0 last week and is 168-24 on the season, is looking to finish strong. Here's our look at the state championship games:

Class 5A: Bishop Gorman vs. Bishop Manogue (1:30 p.m. Saturday at Carson High School)

There’s not much to analyze here, as Bishop Gorman should enjoy a lopsided win on the way to another state championship. Gorman has won 12 of 14 contested state championships since 2007, and there’s no reason to believe Bishop Manogue will be a threat to the dynasty. Bishop Gorman 56, Bishop Manogue 0

Class 4A: Shadow Ridge vs. Silverado (7 p.m. Monday at Allegiant Stadium)

When the reimagined class 4A was launched last season, it was Shadow Ridge that many pegged as the team to beat. Shadow Ridge’s misdirection rushing attack is tough to defend when you only see it once a year. The Mustangs are well coached, and they usually have an edge with the strength of their lineman. That logic has proven accurate with the exception of games against one opponent: Silverado. Silverado topped Shadow Ridge twice last season, including a 61-27 beat down in the state championship game. Silverado wins again — just not by five touchdowns. Silverado 33, Shadow Ridge 18

Class 3A: Truckee vs. Slam Charter (12:20 p.m. Monday at Allegiant Stadium)

The game is a mismatch. Slam has more speed at the offensive skilled position, its lineman are significantly bigger, and most important, the Las Vegas team is playing at home. Traveling from Northern Nevada for a Monday game will be no easy task for Truckee. Slam 29, Truckee 19
