Two teams of Cougars battled it out for the 4A state golf championship Thursday, but it was Spanish Springs that utilized home-course advantage to topple Southern Nevada powerhouse Coronado by eight strokes, 754-762.
Spanish Springs, which won the 2007 state championship, headed into the second and final day of the 36-hole tournament on the Lake Course at the Resort at Red Hawk in Sparks with a four-shot lead over Coronado.
Although Spanish Springs' team score ballooned from a 373 on Wednesday to a 381 on Thursday, Coronado did not fair any better, dropping from a 377 to a 385.
Spanish Springs, which ultimately finished with a 754, was led by freshman Jordan Gilmore. Gilmore shot two consecutive 1-under 71s to tie Las Vegas High senior Raymond Gillip for the individual lead.
Gillip pulled out the one-hole playoff, however, to claim the individual crown.
Coronado freshman A.J. McInerney failed to maintain a two-stroke lead in the second round as he finished third overall with a 145 after shooting a 4-over 76 on Thursday.
McInerney's teammate, sophomore Tad Darland finished fourth with a 147.
The defending state champion Palo Verde Panthers led the rest of the pack with a third place showing on a 64-over 784 total team score.
