Former UNLV soccer star to coach Bishop Gorman boys

Expanded coverage

Bishop Gorman High School has found a replacement for the Arbelaez family legacy.

The Gaels announced the hiring of former UNLV star Doug Bergel as the head men's soccer coach Thursday.

Bergel helped the Rebels win the 1987 Big West Championship and earned the Big West Player of the Year honors in 1989 and 1990. He also served as the graduate assistant head coach for UNLV before graduating with a degree in business administration.

"I'm really excited at the opportunity to coach at Bishop Gorman, having lived in town for twenty-plus years," Borgel said in a press release. "I've followed the program closely, know many of the players personally and can't wait to get started."

After wrapping up his playing career with the 1994 CISL Championship as a member of the Las Vegas Dustdevils, Borgel became involved in coaching the Premier Soccer Club. He won five state titles with Premier and helped more than a dozen players land collegiate soccer scholarships.

The Gaels have won four state championships, including back-to-back titles under Victor Arbelaez in 2006 and 2007.

"It is the beginning of a new era for soccer at Bishop Gorman High School," said Athletic Director Dr. Peter Weinburgh. "Doug knows Las Vegas soccer and I have every confidence that his experience and enthusiasm for the game will ensure a smooth transition and a productive future for the Gaels."
