The first day of the 2009 MLB Entry Draft is in the books and no Las Vegas baseball players heard their names called Tuesday including Bishop Gorman star pitcher and first baseman Jeff Malm.
Malm, who is headed to USC after helping lead the Gaels to their fourth consecutive 4A state championship, was not drafted within the first three rounds as expected by several different scouting services. Malm tied an all-time national record for career hits (277) with one hit in that state title contest in May.
A total of 111 players, 43 straight from high school, were drafted Tuesday.
The MLB Entry Draft continues Wednesday with the Washington Nationals starting the fourth round with pick No. 112. The Nationals, as expected, drafted San Diego State pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg with the first overall selection.
