Findlay ranked 8th in national prep hoops poll

Findlay College Prep is ranked eighth in the Kansas City, Mo.-based National Prep Basketball Poll released Monday.

The Pilots, who went 32-1 last season and lost in the final of the National Prep Championship game in the Bronx, N.Y., return UNLV-bound power forward Carlos Lopez.

Guards Avery Bradley (headed for Texas) and D.J. Richardson (Illinois) also will play important roles for the Pilots this season.

The prep poll, compiled by high school insiders Jamie DeMoney and Jeremy Plowman, is topped by Duncanville, Texas, which went 35-2 last season.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, Marietta (Geo.) Wheeler, Brooklyn Lincoln and Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict round out the top five.

No. 6 Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick and No. 7 Los Angeles Fairfax precede Findlay in the poll.

“The schools up there, like Mater Dei and Duncanville, have been around forever,” said Findlay coach Mike Peck. “Year in and year out, they’re national powers. We’re in our third season of existence.

“To break into that, I think, is very significant. We don’t get caught up in it or rest our hat on it, but it is a nice attribute.”

Minnetonka (Minn.) Hopkins and Rockville (Md.) Montrose Christian cap the top 10 of the poll.

Findlay is rated as the No. 2 team, behind Duncanville, in the Southwest.

The Pilots open their season next weekend with two games in Michigan, then they play in Rhode Island the following weekend.

Findlay’s home opener, played at the Henderson International School gym, is Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. against Centennial.
