Findlay rises to No. 2 in USA Today rankings

Findlay College Prep is a notch away from being the best high school basketball team in the nation.

The Pilots (8-0) were ranked second, moving up a spot since last week, in Tuesday’s USA Today Super 25 national poll.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei remained atop the poll at 5-0.

Brooklyn (N.Y.) Lincoln, ranked second last week, plummeted to No. 16 after losing to then-No. 19 Duncanville of Texas by 20 points. Duncanville improved to 12th this week.

Findlay is led by guards Avery Bradley (committed to Texas) and D.J. Richardson (Illinois), and power forward Carlos Lopez (UNLV).

Lopez twisted his left ankle Saturday night when he landed awkwardly on swingman Victor Rudd’s right ankle, but Findlay coach Mike Peck said Lopez is fine and he will start tonight.

Rudd is fast becoming a star. UNLV, DePaul, Gonzaga, Arizona, Washington and Marquette are recruiting him, and he said he is in no hurry to make a decision.

Findlay had been scheduled to play Rise Academy, out of Pennsylvania, tonight and Wednesday night, but travel difficulties forced Rise to stay home.

Instead, Findlay will play Stoneridge Prep, from California, tonight. Tip-off will take place a bit past 8 p.m.

Peck said he is scrambling to find an opponent for Wednesday night.

The Pilots play in the Henderson International School’s gym. To get there, go south on Eastern, off the 215. Take a left on Summit Grove. It will be on the left side just before Sandy Ridge.
