Findlay rolls to 8-0; Rudd interested in UNLV

After scoring 22 mostly electric points Saturday night in a 93-33 victory over Green Valley High, Victor Rudd of Findlay College Prep said he is interested in UNLV.

A Rebels scholarship for 2009-10 opened up Friday when center Beas Hamga was granted his release.

Rudd said Findlay coach Mike Peck told him that UNLV coaches had called Peck on Rudd’s behalf to tell him of their interest in the 6-foot-7 senior forward.

Rudd saw UNLV play against California recently at the Thomas & Mack Center.

“I have more than a little interest in UNLV,” Rudd said. “I don’t know that much about them, but I like UNLV. They have a lot of good players. I’ll definitely look at them.”

Before the season, Rudd told the Sun that Arizona, Marquette and Washington figured most prominently in his recruiting picture.

It’s no surprise that others have become involved with Rudd as he has heated up this season.

Gonzaga and DePaul, he said, have also entered the picture.

He went into Saturday’s game at the Henderson International School, with which Findlay is affiliated, averaging 13 points a game for the Pilots.

Rudd went 4-for-4 from beyond the 3-point arc against the Gators, and he also had 9 rebounds and 7 steals.

Rudd started the second half against the Gators with a 3-point shot from the left side. A bit later he had a fastbreak jam from the right side, a 3-pointer from the left corner and a stunning one-handed alley-oop dunk on the right side on a superb feed from D.J. Richardson.

Texas-bound guard Avery Bradley, averaging a team-best 23 points, led the 8-0 Pilots with 25 points against Green Valley (3-2).

UNLV commitment Carlos Lopez, a standout power forward, sprained his left ankle with 2 minutes, 37 seconds remaining in the third quarter when he appeared to land on Rudd's right ankle during a defensive play.

Lopez left the game, got his ankle thoroughly wrapped and taped, but did not return.

Findlay, ranked third in the latest USA Today Super 25 national prep rankings, is beating its foes by an average score of 90-56.

“I think we have the best offense in the nation,” Rudd said, “and we want to have the best defense in the nation, too.

“We’re all excited about being ranked third, but we want to be No. 1. We have to keep playing hard and keep our poise.”
