Sarah spends

O.K. Technically it was the Republican National Committee that did the big spending at Saks and Neimans, but Sarah Palin could have said no.

How did Palin expect her shopping spree to jibe with her no-nonsense, cost-cutting, mainstreet-mom-on-a-budget image? And the revelation comes at a time when Palin is renewing her wooing of women who are struggling to feed their families and pay their bills. Is it a good or bad thing for the McCain camp that the news of Alaska's first couple's scheduled deposition tomorrow is almost an afterthought in the news?

I marveled the other day while at the Henderson Pavillion at Palin's behaved, beautiful and polished children. Not that they would have looked any less beautiful in duds from JC Penney, but even I and my four children would look spiffy if I laid down 150 grand at the Fashion Show Mall. Maybe I should run for vice president. I'm qualified in foreign policy. I am Russian.

Tonight, we take a break from the local races to bring you the chairmen of both national parties. Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean says Republicans aren't very good at running the nation, but they're great at winning elections. The guy who paid the tab at Saks and Neimans, Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan, takes exception to the focus on what he calls the little things, like suiting up Sarah. Tune in for Jon at his finest.
