When UNLV's men's basketball coaching post opened up in early April, the buzz about Rebels legend Larry Johnson wanting to be considered for the gig was stiff. Johnson maintains that he was never contacted by athletic director Jim Livengood and his staff during their search for Lon Kruger's replacement. Apparently, that still doesn't sit well with Johnson almost four months later. Some comments from Johnson made today in a piece on GamingToday.com show that. "I don't like those Arizona people (Livengood and a few of his staff members, who came to UNLV from UA) in the administration and they don't like me," Johnson said. "It's not UNLV Runnin' Rebels no more, it's UNLV Wildcats right now." It was no secret that many members of UNLV's memorable squads from the early 1990s weren't all that happy with the way the program's glorious run came to an end, without any support from its own administration. When Kruger took the job prior to the 2004-05 season, bringing those guys back into the fold and embracing the program's tradition was looked at as a priority. "Kruger gained my respect for what he was doing and the way he was trying to bring back previous Rebels, who had a bitter taste in their mouths with the University for how the Tark situation was handled," he said. "Lon did an excellent job extending the olive branch. I was attending more games, going to alumni banquets and all the alumni golf tournaments. I was getting back involved. "People all over town, wherever I went, asked me if I wanted to coach. They wanted me and Stacey (Augmon), knowing he had been an assistant coach. They had to hire him (as an assistant), knowing they would never consider me." Those are some pretty stiff accusations. Augmon earned his way onto his alma mater's bench, paying his dues as an NBA assistant for the last four years. It appears that the root of Johnson's angst stems from never being contacted by Livengood. Some will argue that as arguably the greatest player in program history, he deserved that much at least. Others will say that Livengood handled the hiring process in a timely fashion and didn't waste time handing out courtesy interviews. In the end, he made a great hire to the most deserving candidate in Dave Rice. Where do you stand on Johnson's comments?
UNLV great Larry Johnson still upset he was never contacted to coach the Rebels

the kid sounds bitter but i dont see a national championship ring on his finger so im not too upset.
He's just feeling left out. Rice and Augmon will reach out and reel em in. Hang in there Larry and remain a part of the UNLV Rebels. Need Shark Bytes.
hmm - wonder if he advocates a tax hike so he and the coaching staff as it is contributes positively to society -- yes, it has nothing to do with the merits of the coaches but it reflects a perceived indifference to the future of Amerika
The school needs to go on the mend now because we have already seen what happens when you black ball our past history. We had fifteen years of crap bball practically. However,LJ, you still are my favorite player but you have to stop acting like a little girl. Help the team out and they will always have a place for you. Max or not you don't say things like you'd turn your back on them. Disappointed in both sides.
Livengood's job was to find a HEAD Coach, and he did that with a guy who has been coaching for almost 20 years now. It's Dave Rice's job to hire his staff, and I think he did an amazing job in a short period of time in doing that. LJ was never going to be the head coach at UNLV. Great guy, amazing player, and an ambassador for the program, but let's be real here, what are his coaching credentials? That's what this is about after all, coaching players and winning games.
Which guy is LJ more qualified than?
Justin Hutson - one of the hottest up-and-coming coaches in America
Heath Schroyer - a head coach previously and brings East Coast recruiting ties (already being the source of one player)
Stacey Augmon - cut his teeth as an NBA assistant
I think Dave Rice did an amazing job of putting his staff together and, while it would have been nice to extend the courtesy, Livengood and ultimately Rice, did not have the luxury of time on their sides.
We still love you, Grandmama, can't wait to see you courtside and at the golf tourneys with your old Runnin' REBELS teammates!
Get Over it Larry. You were a player...YOU ARE NOT A COACH. Trashing UNLV was totally classless. I have lost a lot of respect. To say "we put Vegas on the map" was he trying to take personal credit for that? I believe Tark built the program and deserves that credit, not a 2 year player. Dave Rice was a player the same exact years as Larry was yet it seems he is implying he was more deserving because he was a better player. Give me a break. UNLV went to the final four just 2 years before Larry arived on campus, yet he's trying to take credit for something it took Tark Decades to build. Get off your high horse and come back down to earth !!!
