Mountain West proposes 8-team playoff to BCS

On a Wednesday afternoon conference call, Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson and four other University leaders from within the league presented to the BCS the idea of an 8-team college football playoff system.

The proposed tournament-style setup would allow schools from outside the six 'power conferences' a more balanced shot at a national championship.

As it stands, the champions of each of the six major conferences -- Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, ACC and SEC -- receive automatic BCS bowl bids, while the field is rounded out by four at-large berths.

Utah received one of those at-large nods this season, and the undefeated Utes knocked off Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, landing them in the No. 2 slot in the final poll. Meanwhile, Florida defeated Oklahoma for the BCS national championship. Utah, however, finished the season as the only unbeaten major college football team, but never drew legitimate consideration for a spot in the title tilt.
