Web site unveils Obama’s help for homeowners

WASHINGTON -- Help for homeowners looking to refinance their mortgages or negotiate lower payments with their bank can be found on a new government Web site that surprisingly doesn’t look like a government Web site at all.

The Obama administration’s Housing and Urban Development Department unveiled the new tool today as it begins putting in place the elements of the president’s housing rescue initiative.

Critics say Nevadans may not find much relief in Obama’s plan, because so many houses in Las Vegas and elsewhere in the state are now worth less than homeowners owe. Obama’s refinancing plan is geared toward those who have equity or are just slightly underwater, by no more than 5 percent.

But Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan has said many Nevadans will still qualify for federal aid.

See for yourself. The website is MakingHomeAffordable.gov.
