Derby-Heller race gets CNN mention

WASHINGTON -- Democratic candidate Jill Derby got a shout out tonight on CNN in her rematch against Republican Rep. Dean Heller in Nevada’s Republican-leaning mostly northern district.

In comments on the “Situation Room,” Democratic strategist Paul Begala said he’s in Nevada today and Derby “has a very good chance of beating this guy.”

“You’re going to see Democrats win in places like Jill Derby’s … where we never had a chance to win in the past.”

Maybe, maybe not. The seat has been Republican-held since it was formed after the 1980 census. In 2006, Heller beat Derby by 5 percentage points when they both ran for the open seat. Pundits at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report are watching the race this year, but still rate it as leaning Republican.
