Ensign, GOP senators: No bailout money for Big Three

WASHINGTON -- Nevada Sen. John Ensign joined six other conservative, mostly Southern Republican senators in writing a letter urging President George W. Bush not to tap the $700 billion bank bailout fund to help the auto industry.

Politico had the story here and Ensign’s office released the letter this morning.

“Last week, the Senate rejected a legislative bailout after the United Auto Workers (UAW) union refused to agree to changes necessary to help the Big Three automakers become competitive,” the senators wrote yesterday.

“Absent such restructuring, we do not believe any amount of money will succeed in saving these companies.”

Last week Ensign put it more directly saying said Bush should “show some courage” and refuse to tap the Wall Street funds for the $14 billion loan to the Big Three.

As he did last week in helping to lead Republican efforts to kill the bailout, Ensign joins some of the Senate’s most conservative senators in writing to the president.

Those on the letter included Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn, Texas Sen. John Cornyn, Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi, Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions.
