A little light reading for Ensign

WASHINGTON -- It’s the holiday season here in Washington, and Nevada’s two senators, John Ensign and Harry Reid, have never been stingy when it comes to giving one another politically appropriate gifts.

This year, at tonight’s annual holiday party for the two Senate offices, Reid, a Democrat, offered up the annual gag.

Reid’s gift to Ensign: A collection of books by comedian Al Franken, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Minnesota who is in a bitter recount against incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman.

Ensign led his Republican Party’s efforts to win Senate seats this year, a job that seems it may never end as the recount drags on.

Reid offered to have the books signed by the author, and suggested they might make for good reading material for Ensign on the flights to and from Las Vegas.

Last year, you may recall, Ensign gave Reid a chunk of coal -- a nod to Reid’s opposition to the new coal plants planned for Nevada.
