Patriot Majority, the pro-Harry Reid independent expenditure group, is out with a new ad on conservative radio in Reno designed, in part, to push voters toward Tea Party of Nevada candidate Scott Ashjian.

The ad ostensibly attacks Republican Sharron Angle for attempting to make a “backroom deal” to get Ashjian out of the race. It labels her as “just another politician,” while casting Ashjian as a reasonable alternative for voters fed up with politics as usual.

The ad mentions Ashjian by name four times, calling him the “tea party guy.”

“Scott Ashjian is still running against Angle and Harry Reid,” one of the characters in the ad says.

“I thought Sharron Angle was going to be different,” one of the characters in the ad says.

“Nope, just another politician out for herself,” the second character answers.

The ad makes a point to say: “Scott Ashjian is still running against Angle and Harry Reid.”

Craig Varoga, who runs Patriot Majority, cast the ad as anti-Angle, not pro-Ashjian.

“We have an anti-Angle radio spot that criticizes her for four things: One, getting caught on tape trying to do a backroom deal; two, saying rape victims should make a lemon situation into lemonade; three, being a typical politician out for herself; and four, for having a lot of crazy dangerous ideas that could hurt people,” he said in an email statement.

Angle met with Ashjian late last month in an attempt to get him to drop out of the race and back her. During the meeting, she says she would share her influence as a U.S. Senator with Ashjian and brags about the “juice” she has with conservative members of the Senate.

  1. The Reid camp pulling a dirty political trick? Say it ain't so!

  2. Harry Reid, the best friend an illegal immigrant or Scott Ashjian could have.

  3. Educating voters as to Angle's extreme agenda and her shady backroom arm-twisting is a political trick?

Voters deserve to be informed about all candidates before they make their choice in November.

  4. Ummm, this is NOT from the Reid campaign. Remember what "INDEPENDENT EXPENDITURE" means? It means the Reid campaign has no control over what Patriot Majority does.

And while the ad did make Ashjian sound good, it still sounded more anti-Angle. And it's not like they lied about any of the facts on Angle's "Tea Tapes".

  5. "This is exactly what we need more of. Way to go folks!" - TonyCrago

That has to be one of the most disgusting statements I have read lately. That is exactly why we have such hatred in our politics today. Instead of trying to fix our badly broken campaign procedures this person wants to continue with even more obnoxious and detestable tactics.

Is it any wonder we have nothing but crap to choose from on the ballot when this is what supporters endorse?

  6. "She failed to mention a very very important fact. The "independent" group is ran by Harry's ex-chief of staff."

I guess the "Pro-Harry Reid group" misnomer in the title wasn't good enough for Sgt James F Nance Jr Rock?

Or, "a pro-Harry Reid independent expenditure group" disclaimer in the first sentence of the story?

Did Sgt James F Nance Jr Rock read ANYTHING in this story before he ruthlessly attacked a journalist?

  7. That sgtrock; such a nice man!

    Let's face it...
Every trick in the book will be utilized by both sides between now and Nov. 2nd.
    Why?
Because this is the system we have wrought in America.
All these MEGABUCKS being spent by "special interest" groups, the PAC dough, the CORPORATIONS that now have FREE REIGN to sway the electorate with their funny money...
"The People" are inundated with meaningless, mindless, unadulterated B.S.... in a close race like Reid/AngLe, MILLIONS will be spent to buy a few votes, based on lies, deceit, and misinformation in these final weeks.
    I think the system sucks.

I DO like that SCOTT ASHJIAN fella...he's a real-live Tea Party Maverick!
I hope he has a nice showing in the election.

  8. Well duh! Who didn't see this premeditated ploy coming?

  9. I don't see or understand how Reid, that political parasite, can wake up and look at himself.
This you got to see folks.

  10. Nice shade of rose on those eyeglass lenses, Angle supporters.

  11. BCDave...
    You, sir, are an ass.
And representative of the hateful NutJob.
    Seek help, sir.

  12. These events simply point to the awkward truth that a mob rule Democracy is not sustainable, and will in time destroy itself. Our founding fathers knew this, and they attempted to form a Republic. Today, during each election cycle we endure negative campaign messages, lies and worse. In the end we all simply hold our nose and if the stench is not too strong we vote for the least offensive person on the ballet. I do think the Chinese did get it right as when they were asked what they thought of our Democracy. Their answer, in part, was that we had not yet faced the test of time. How much time does our Mob rule Democracy have left?

  13. I'm voting for Harry Reid, but Scott Ashjian sure has a lot more to offer than Sharrrron Angle. Just about anybody does.

No mention of all the dirty tricks Karl Rove is pulling to get rid of his sworn enemy, Harry Reid? Does anyone really want Karl Rove running the federal government again?

  14. NotForAngle,

I have voiced my disdain for the severe divide in politics today several times in the past. I find comments such as the one I quoted to do nothing but increase that divide and hatred between people who otherwise are probably good hearted.

The attitude of "they did it so we can do it, too" is NOT justification for the actions I see, no matter who tries to use it. I have called out Republicans on this as well as Democrats. There is simply no excuse for that sentiment. It's not that two wrongs don't make a right, it's that it is just plain wrong.

Just for the record, I held my nose when I voted for Kerry in 2004 because I detested Bush. I happily voted for Gore in 2000. To this day I and my family believe I suffered a heart attack 2 weeks after the 2004 election because I was so upset over Bush being declared the winner.

I have stated my reasons for not wanting Reid to be re-elected and why I can not in good conscience vote "None of these candidates" even though I have stated that I detest (using that word) a number of Angle's views. You are free to accept that or not.

By the way, I have called repeatedly for campaign finance reform, advocating that only those who are eligible to vote for the office in question should be allowed to contribute to a candidate for that office. That would automatically deny all participation to corporations and organizations. I have never seen you respond to any of those comments.
