Gibbons to skip Sandoval’s inauguration ceremony

Updated Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 | 3:48 p.m.

Gov. Jim Gibbons will not be attending Gov.-elect Brian Sandoval’s inauguration ceremony Monday, his chief of staff confirmed today.

Gibbons is scheduled to undergo a medical procedure Monday morning and won’t be able to make the swearing in of the man who defeated him in the Republican primary earlier this year, Gibbons’ chief of staff Robin Reedy said.

Gibbons also continues to recover from a broken pelvis he suffered in a horse-riding accident. That injury makes it difficult for him to sit or stand for long periods of time.

It’s not the first time a sitting governor has decided not to attend his successor’s inauguration.

In 2007, Gov. Kenny Guinn declined to attend Gibbons’ ceremony. The two had a contentious relationship and clashed repeatedly over both personal and political issues.

  1. Gibbons continues to demonstrate his lack of class and disrespect for the American process. The only one Gibbons has ever cared about is himself, as evidenced by the ever increasing dossier documenting his bad behavior.

He's an embarrassment to the state and a coward to those who depended upon him (us).

Jimbo is going out in a whimper and he knows it but he's not above trying to slap us on the rear one more time before he goes. You know, just for old time's sake.

  2. Uhavetolaugh - you nailed it. Gibbons is an arrogant coward. He had 3 swearing in ceremonies because he was so into himself but he can't attend Sand Ovals ceremony. Good riddance to him.

  3. On the 9th day of Christmas--no more Jimbo.

  4. Don't need Jimbo there - already have a stuffed shirt cleaner version of him in Sandoval. Sandoval should be recalled NOW before he does more damage.

  5. Who's ranch were you at? A contributor? Was this a BLM horse? Was it your horse? Who's paying your medical bills? Why don't you go on Medicare and save the taxpayers some money?

Why do you hire a "law firm" to sue over the Health-care Bill at the same time Nevada applies for subsidies under the Bill?

What connections do you have with the law firm?

  6. Let's be grateful. Now it's safe for women to attend the ceremony.

  7. Yay. More reason to celebrate.

  8. Old Jimbo pretty much missed the last four years.

  9. He dies as he lives, alone, broken and full of his wonderful self. Bye jim.

  10. Here is to hoping the brain transplant and soul recovery medical procedure is a complete success. . . and helps to unlock and answer all of the unanswered questions swirling around our misunderstood Lord and Master of the past 4 years.

  11. @NVFisherman-"give the man a break" At meet the Gov Day in Goldfield NV 2007. My wife Ana thanked Mr Gibbons for his help with an immigration issue(when he was a Congressman) that kept her out of the U.S. away from her children and husband for 1 year. Gov Gibbons was so moved he asked for a picture with us. We handed Gov Gibbons a letter detailing a problem in the Nevada mining industry and he pledge to help and make sure things were right, well that's not what happened. His Dept of Ind. Mendy Elloitt and Nevada Mine Safety and Training Section CAO Ed Tomany, lied, and stonewalled the same as they had up to that point for over a year and refused to investigate a timely formal complaint. Mr Gibbons knows he lied, he is a coward, and worse. Follow-up letters to Gov went unanswered. I gave my vote to Mr Gibbons, a miner has a right to an inspection of the mine and record/facts. Mr Gibbons believes a phone call to Round Mountain Gold Corp is a proper and lawful investigation. . .he is wrong. On the job safety in Nevada is MIA on Gibbons watch. Courtesy, deplorable, ill, injured?
When someone looks you in the eye and lies and helps to ruin your reputation and livelihood, would you like it? PR B125 SP NV 89047

  12. Even though Jim Gibbons is slightly more conservative, this is a prime example of the selfish nonsense that forced me, a very conservative voter, to support Brian Sandoval for governor. Although the governor-elect is slightly less conservative than Gibbons as far as political ideology is concerned, Brian Sandoval conducts himself with the up-most honor and dignity, which is exactly how a true conservative should behave. Meanwhile, Jim Gibbons did all he could to bring shame and ridicule upon Nevada. I will be very pleased to finally have a man that I can call an honorable leader of my state, who is also the most prominent Republican in Nevada. May God bless Governor-Elect Sandoval!

  13. I didn't vote for Mr. Sandoval, but I have hope he will turn out to be a better Governor than Gibbons. Unfortunately that's not setting the bar very high.

When Gov. Gibbons was elected I told AM talk loon Heidi that she should be ashamed of herself. I still stand by that notion.

I concur with jegan. I don't agree with Governor-elect Sandoval's political beliefs, but he seems to be an honorable man and I believe he will put the interests of Nevada above his personal and political aspirations.

Congratulations and good luck Governor-Elect Sandoval.
