Comedian Rita Rudner stepped demurely on stage at Harrah's Showroom on Thursday to introduce the opening of “Hats! The Musical!” before a colorfully costumed crowd of Red Hat Society members, who were celebrating the 10th birthday of their group.
And then Rudner asked them to TAKE OFF their towering plumed hats — so the people sitting behind them in the cabaret-style theater could see the stage.
Designed to share a built-in audience base with “Menopause: The Musical” (hitting its second-year mark at the Las Vegas Hilton), "Hats!" is cheery in a cheerleader-y way, a 60-minute infomercial for the fun-loving international society for women over 50.
Featuring a cast of seven, it's an unevenly stitched together (and still somewhat under-rehearsed) patchwork of songs, about a 49.999-year-old woman as she struggles against embracing her age. It all ends with a house-lights-up kickline and an Inspiring Lesson: "If you settle for what you've got, you deserve what you get."
Look for the review of "Hats!" in Sunday's Las Vegas Sun.
