Live radio on the big screen

KNPR listeners know that "This American Life" is one of the best (smartest, saddest, funniest...) programs available on radio. And on TV. And now, for one night only, at the movies.

On Thursday, May 1, "This American Life" will be broadcast live from New York via satellite to select movie theaters nationwide. The one-night event features special guests -- we're hoping for TAL favorites David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell, David Rakoff and Jack Hitt -- and is presented in HD and Cinema Surround Sound. (Las Vegas and other Pacific Time cities will receive the show's feed on delay; showtime is 8 p.m.)

Tickets are $20 (I can hear you now: $20? To watch radio? But fans of this show know it will be worth it to see and hear Glass and co.), and the program is being shown in Las Vegas at the Colonnade 14, Sam's Town 18, Orleans 18, Village Square 18 and Santa Fe Station 16. Tickets are available here.

"This American Life" is heard on more than 500 stations with an audience of 1.7 million weekly listeners. If you've never heard the show, you can catch up at the iTunes Store, where nearly every episode is available as a free downloadable podcast. It's also available at Audible.com.

Glass, who started the show 12 years ago, once tried to describe the indescribable: "It's a weekly show. It's an hour. Its mission is to document everyday life in this country. We sometimes think of it as a documentary show for people who normally hate documentaries. A public radio show for people who don't necessarily care for public radio."
