Council picks city lawyer for judicial post

The Las Vegas City Council today unanimously selected Cynthia Leung, a nine-year employee in the city attorney' office who currently handles criminal cases, to fill a judicial appointment on the Municipal Court.

Council members talked about the difficulty of the decision given the quality of the candidates seeking to replace Judge Toy Gregory, who died last month.

The candidates' identity, however, was secret. The city has no formal process for filling judicial appointments, despite concerns about the process voiced five years ago.

Before Leung's appointment, some suggested that the city was leaning toward appointing someone from the city attorney's office in order to have someone in place more likely to support the city's point of view in matters that go before the court.

Leung would not comment on that theory after her appointment.
