The Daytona 500 is finally here

This is a joyous time of year in my house. It’s joyous because the NASCAR Sprint Cup season is ready to start. But no one in my house is happier than my wife. With the off-season ending, she will no longer have to suffer through those many nights of watching “World’s Wildest Police Videos” or multiple viewings of the chase scene from the movie “The French Connection” just so I can get my fix of seeing cars going fast.

My children will be happy, too. Now I’ll be too busy watching the race on Sundays to bug them about getting their homework done for Monday.

But there is one person who may not be happy about all of this. My mother. She decided to come to Las Vegas for a visit this weekend, which is the weekend of the Daytona 500. Doesn’t she understand that this is the one weekend a year where my concentration can’t afford the distraction of family bonding?

I can guarantee you one thing: by the time this weekend is over, my mother will be a NASCAR fan.
