Observations from Sunday’s Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway

Is it just me or has Carl Edwards become a less popular winner since his run-in with Roush Fenway Racing teammate Matt Kenseth -- in which Edwards faked a punch -- last year at Martinsville and the allegations that his team cheated following Edwards’ victory earlier this season at Las Vegas? …

Kyle Busch’s third-place finish at Texas was his series-leading fourth top-five finish in seven races this season. J.J. Yeley, whom Busch replaced at Joe Gibbs Racing, had only one top-five finish in two full seasons in the No. 18. …

While there is a lot of racing left in the season, Jamie McMurray, who replaced Kurt Busch at Roush Fenway Racing prior to the 2006 season, is in danger of missing the Chase for the third consecutive season. McMurray is 25th in points following his 14th-place finish Sunday at Texas. …

Speaking of Yeley, when is NASCAR going to wise up and order all of its speedways to put SAFER barriers on the inside walls? Yeley’s crash midway through Sunday’s race was just another in a growing list of such hard hits the past couple of seasons. …

And why did NASCAR officials shoo away Speed Channel’s cameramen who were trying to film Michael McDowell’s wrecked car after his horrific crash during Friday’s qualifying session? If I ran NASCAR, I’d be proud of how all the safety measures worked and that McDowell was able to walk away from such a mangled car. …

Of all the competition rules changes NASCAR has put into place during the past decade, the green-white-checkered finish continues to be one of the best and the “lucky dog” rule -- giving a lap back to the first driver who is running a lap down, whether he deserves it or not -- is among the worst.
