The Coronado High football team pulled off the biggest upset in the initial week of playoff games by shocking Desert Pines 35-12 on Thursday night.

It was a drastic change from the regular season meeting between the schools on Oct. 5, when Desert Pines won by 41 points.

“We haven’t had many games where offense, defense and special teams all played well and played clean. That happened tonight,” coach Shawn Dupris said.

Matt Hunt had an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the victory, and Skyler Jackson had a pair of rushing touchdowns.

If Coronado pulls of another upset in the postseason it will make national headlines. The Cougars play Bishop Gorman, the nation’s No. 1 ranked team, in the semifinals next week.

“We have a lot of youth, but the kids are responding and working hard,” Dupris said.
