Pedestrian killed

A pedestrian is dead after being struck on a Henderson sidewalk by a sport utility vehicle that veered off the road, according to Henderson police.

The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m. Friday on Hampton Road near Point Pleasant Drive in the Anthem neighborhood.

According to police spokesman Keith Paul, the 2008 Jeep Commander, which was driven by an elderly man, left the roadway for unknown reasons and struck a 71-year-old man on the sidewalk. Police identified the driver as Chester F. Budd, 78, of Henderson.

The pedestrian, who was hit from behind, was pronounced dead at the scene, Paul said.

Investigators are in the process of interviewing the driver and examining the accident site to determine why the vehicle left the road, Paul said.

The Clark County coroner's office will release the victim's name after family has been notified, police said.

This year, seven people have been killed in four traffic crashes in Henderson, police said.
