Google wants special driver’s license in Nevada to operate robotic car

Question: If you’re operating a self-driving robotic car, should you be exempt from a law banning texting while driving?

That’s exactly what a Nevada lobbyist representing Google is asking state lawmakers to consider today.

Google has been beta-testing a robotic car that can drive itself using GPS, radar, lasers, cameras and artificial intelligence.

The company will try to convince the Nevada Legislature to create the first driver’s license in the nation for the operation of robotic cars, said lobbyist David Goldwater.

But as lawmakers take up a bill this afternoon to prohibit text messaging while driving, Goldwater first will propose an amendment exempting operators of robotic cars from the new legislation.

Creating the special license would position Nevada as a beta-testing site for Google to continue developing the technology, which could lead to additional economic development opportunities in the state, Goldwater argued.
