Why are presidential candidates courting Nevada?
As the first state in the West to hold a caucus or primary, Nevada has been thrust into the political spotlight. The majority of Republicans, other than Mitt Romney, have largely concentrated their efforts in states such as South Carolina and Florida, while Democrats have focused on Nevada's powerful labor unions and large population of minorities as a key component to winning this battleground state. Many of the issues facing Nevada apply to all western states, making the Silver State an ideal place to spotlight issues such as immigration, and renewable energy and water usage.
