Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s 12-round, split-decision, super-welterweight victory over Erislandy Lara on Saturday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena drew a star-studded crowd that nearly overshadowed the boxing action in the ring.
Mexican national team goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was a guest of Canelo and boxing legend turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya’s, and the 14,000-plus-strong arena went crazy when he was announced before and after the fight. Forward Javier Hernandez also joined his Mexican countrymen in the ring.
Also in attendance at the big bout: actor Mario Lopez, actress Hannah Simone, boxing legend and Las Vegas resident Mike Tyson, boxers Alfredo Angulo, Jesse James Leija, John Molina, J’Leon Love, Peter Quillin and Shawn Porter and Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
