Ben Harris Reason to Smile
Editor’s Note: While Robin Leach heads to Milan and Switzerland before his traditional summer vacation under the Tuscan sun in Italy — plus the lakes of northern Italy this year — many of our Strip personalities have again stepped forward in his absence to pen their own words of wisdom. We continue today with Ben Harris, Mirage headliner Terry Fator’s opening act.
It’s an honor to fill in for Robin Leach and Vegas Deluxe. I met Robin backstage at the Mirage, and he’s a very cool guy. One of the perks of working in this town is you get to meet great people like Robin and my boss, Terry Fator.
Working with “Terry Fator: The Voice of Entertainment” the past five years has blessed me with a lot of firsts and perks in my career, including my first flight in a private jet, my first tour in a fully furnished tour bus and the opportunity to perform in amazing historic theaters across the country.
This year, I had my first song placed as a songwriter for an artist other than myself. “Pass That Bottle” can be found on Terry Fator’s new album and DVD, “It Starts Tonight,” available everywhere. Another exciting first!
Ben Harris Reason to Smile
Aside from performing with the Terry Fator show, I’ve been a solo artist for the past 10 years. My latest single, “Reason to Smile,” which can be downloaded on iTunes, was an unforgettable process for me to create. Recording “Reason to Smile” was my first time working at Studio at the Palms.
It was priceless to witness all seven musicians work their magic while producer and engineer Mark Gray whipped around in his studio chair hitting and twisting knobs on the huge mixing console. Thanks again to the Terry Fator Band, Zoe Thrall and Mark for the great experience. Another perk of this town: All the great talent in the music industry.
Another Las Vegas perk: I’ve been able to collaborate with a lot of big-name DJs and producers. I’m currently working with DJ Loczi, headliner at Haze in Aria and Rehab at the Hard Rock Hotel, on the club remix for “Reason to Smile.” I’m also excited about “In My Zone” produced by DJ Schoeny. It’s gaining a lot of buzz on EDM blogs.
When not onstage or recording vocals in my home studio, I’m hanging out with my beautiful wife Natalia and our teacup Yorkie Henry “Hennessey” Harris. In this city, perks and deals are everywhere, and even on our date nights, we look to our Tuesday-night tradition: $5 movie night at South Point. Can’t beat butter topped with light popcorn (ha!), Diet Cherry Coke and those mmm, mmm Red Vines.
We recently saw “Think Like a Man, Too” and it was hilarious. It was shot in Las Vegas and starred Kevin Hart. I was lucky enough to see Kevin’s show at the Mirage, a perk of sharing the Terry Fator Theater.
Speaking of movies in Las Vegas, a shout-out to “Last Vegas.” Although she only had one line, the film stars my wife alongside Robert De Niro. It was a crazy coincidence because she played “The Wheel Girl” at Aria, and she’s actually the Light Group marketing manager for Aria. I definitely don’t mind the perks of her job.
With all these perks, Las Vegas has proved to be an amazing city. I, of course, am hard at work on my next song. It features a big-name producer heard all over urban radio, and I’m so proud of it. Check out BenHarrisTV.com, and follow my socials to catch all my new releases.
Check out our other guest columns today from Mirage headliner Terry Fator and Nove Italiano chef Kieran Toivonen with a preview of his celebrity-chef dinner at the Palms on Thursday night. On Thursday, our guest columnists are Rick Harrison of “Pawn Stars” and Sin City Brewing Co. owner Rich Johnson.
