Jennifer Judkins, Steffi Graf and Gael Vallade at the Longines opening Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, in Aria.
One-time world tennis champion Steffi Graf says that after all the years of playing the sport and winning 22 Grand Slam singles titles, she’s relegated the game to just a few charity matches.
“It’s the same with Andre (Agassi, her husband),” she told me. “We rarely play tennis now, charity games but no tournaments. After all those years, it’s taken its toll on our legs. The worst is the calves and the knees.”
Steffi played sales assistant for me behind the counter of the new Longines Hour Passion boutique she helped open at Aria last Thursday. She has been the ambassador for the Swatch division of Longines for the past six years.
Married to fellow tennis champion Andre, the couple have lived here since their 2001 wedding. Their courtship has run 14 years.
“I really am a Vegas girl now,” she laughed. “My mother is here with us. The whole family, in fact. My brother and his four children, too.”
As she showed me the new line of Longines watches, she said that she’s been to the company’s factory in Switzerland.
“It’s not just learning about the new watches. I learned that they were the first watches used in flight, also as the best timekeeper’s watch and for the (Charles) Lindbergh flights.
“They support many charitable endeavors, including, of course, the work Andre does here with his charter schools in Las Vegas.”
