Smashburger wedding 11/12/13
Bryan Porter and Darlene Hielscher
It was just seconds after midnight this morning that Florida sweethearts Darlene Hielscher and Bryan Porter became the first couple to marry in Las Vegas on 11/12/13 — and the first marriage ceremony performed by Elvis Presley minister Brendan Paul in a burger restaurant.
Wedding chapels across the Valley expect today to be the busiest marriage day of the year because it is the penultimate sequential date of the century, and, for Darlene and Bryan of Ormond Beach, Fla., it fell exactly two years to the day of their first date.
The wedding took place at the new Smashburger on Fort Apache Road with Graceland Chapel’s minister officiating the nuptials alongside a six-tier, piping-hot wedding cake made entirely of Smashburgers.
“Elvis” strummed his guitar and sang while walking the bride down the aisle to her groom. Brendan wove classic Elvis songs into the ceremony, making the couple vow to always “love each other tender” and to never have “suspicious minds.”
After being pronounced husband and wife, they sliced into the 100-hamburger “wedding cake” of signature menu items: Classic Smash; Bacon Cheeseburger; Spicy Baja; and Sin City Burger, a one-of-kind burger created specifically for Las Vegas.
“This was the most exciting thing we’ve ever done,” said the new Mrs. Porter. “We’ve always wanted to get married in Las Vegas. When we were talking about when to get married, Bryan thought it would be fun to get married on 11/12/13.”
Bryan added, “I thought of the date 11/12/13 because I wanted an anniversary I could easily remember!”
Darlene, 43, a sales assistant, and Bryan, 46, an IBEW electrician, have been engaged since winter 2012. They dated in high school but only reconnected two years ago. Their trip also marks their first visit to Las Vegas.
They were selected from a national video campaign created by Smashburger when lovebirds submitted videos via social media explaining their love for one another and burgers. Here is Darlene and Bryan’s winning entry.
In addition to the Elvis-and-burgers-themed ceremony, the couple won round-trip airfare to Las Vegas, a two-night stay in the all-new Bally’s Jubilee Tower suites at Bally’s, along with a couples massage, two tickets to “Jubilee!” and a year’s supply of Smashburgers at any Smashburger location across America.
