The return to Downtown for our annual Opportunity Village Great Santa Run on Dec. 7 was made official this morning. This year, which marks the 10th anniversary of the event, new teams from Italy and Budapest, Hungary, will be competing against Las Vegas; Osaka, Japan; Liverpool, England; and Tasmania, Australia.
Our runners and walkers have held the world record the past two years, with 10,000 taking part this past Christmas. We have to field even more this Christmas because other towns throughout England have pledged support to Liverpool to wrest the trophy back to Britain, where the charity race was started.
Meantime, there’s inside word that comedian Brad Garrett is going to lend his support to Opportunity Village for a similar summer run that will be in Speedos. I won’t be in costume for that one! With The Rio headliner magician Penn Jillette contributing his “All-Star Celebrity Apprentice” efforts to O.V., it’s fantastic that so many showbiz headliners are fulfilling their promises to the beloved charity.
More star power has been added to the Eighth Annual Opportunity Village Celebrity Poker Tournament on April 6 at the Caesars Palace Poker Room. The lineup now includes Penn; “Apprentice” cast mate Omarosa; actor Adrian Zmed; “Dancing With the Stars” pro dancer Lacey Schwimmer; 2012 Playmate of the Year and “Pin Up” at The Stratosphere headliner Claire Sinclair; and others.
The grand-prize winner will receive a seat in the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event at The Rio donated by Caesars Entertainment.
