There are plenty of emotional, heart-tugging moments all week long as superstar Justin Timberlake tees off his annual pro-am golf tournament that culminates Saturday night at Planet Hollywood with the all-star concert Old School Jam.
It’s all to raise funds for the great work of the Shriners Hospitals for Children, and it began yesterday with a golf show by Dennis Walters and his canine pal Bucky. Dennis revealed his motivational life story and performed an amazing variety of trick shots, including a 200-yard putt. He uses everything from billiard cues, a fishing rod, a cell phone, a crutch and champagne bottles to make the ball sink.
Dennis, who was paralyzed from the waist down after a 1974 accident, even managed to sink a ball with an egg balanced atop without cracking it. “Dennis has a remarkable story about perseverance and is a great message to share with young people,” said tournament director Adam Sperling, who was a guest columnist for me in July.
Today, an early breakfast honored the inspirational story of a 13-year-old boy born in Romania who received care from Shriners in Los Angeles. This afternoon, it’s a Team Smile Dental Clinic with players hoping to raise more than last year’s $242,000 in dentistry services for 225 underserved children in the Las Vegas valley.
Tonight, PGA Tour professional Charley Hoffman hosts the first Celebrity Server event at Morton’s Steakhouse. His golfing buddies -- including Chris Riley and Bill Lunde, both from UNLV, Ricky Barnes, John Mallinger and past Las Vegas winner Troy Matteson -- will don aprons to serve a four-course meal to guests. Charley gave a clinic at TPC Summerlin today with another foursome fundraiser.
Mayor Carolyn Goodman will make a keynote speech at the 3rd Annual Women’s Day luncheon tomorrow. On Wednesday, Justin, along with athletes and entertainments, pair up to compete at TPC Summerlin in the MGM Resorts International Championship Pro Am. NFL legend and Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk and Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson are two of the sports stars tackling the greens. Comedy king Brad Garrett will entertain guests at the after-party.
The three days of play end Saturday when Justin hosts an Old School Jam with co-host Wayne Brady at Planet Hollywood. The benefit concert performers include Earth Wind & Fire, The Commodores, Color Me Badd and Vanilla Ice, with many others being added right up until show time.
Vegas DeLuxe will report with photos as the celebrity play gets underway, and we’ll be back with our Weekend Celebrity Preview on Friday with a closer look at Justin and Wayne’s all-star show.
