It’s a knockout weekend, and I’m not just talking about the boxing champions in and out of the ring. The body beautiful of athletic physiques and prowess also will be on show at the Mr. Olympia and Ms. Olympia championships, the most prestigious event in the world of bodybuilding.
The back-from-vacation Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA Welterweight Champion Victor Ortiz, the pride of our friends here celebrating Mexican Independence Day, obviously will grab the headline coverage from inside the ropes at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
But out-of-the-ring Mike Tyson and Sugar Ray Leonard will be making competitive appearances, too: Mike at Chateau Nightclub & Gardens at the Paris and Sugar Ray at Caesars Palace, where he vanquished Tommy “Hitman” Hearns 30 years ago.
The contestants in the Mr. and Ms. Olympia competition flex their muscles all weekend long at the Orleans for the sixth consecutive year. Four-time and current Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler of Las Vegas competes to defend his title and is looking for a three-peat. Hometown heroine Iris Kyle, the current Ms. Olympia, joins with Fitness Olympia Adela Garcia, Figure Olympia Erin Stern and Bikini Olympia Sonia Gonzales in defense of their titles.
It’s not just three days of pugilism, posing and promoting. There’s entertainment for the Mexican holiday (not to be confused with Cinco de Mayo) and a healthy and spicy topping of pop stars and rock bands.
So let’s get ready to rumble (a tip of my hat to Michael Buffer’s trademark) and let the ring girls go on parade with the highlights we affectionately call the Royal Robin Rundown:
