Elijah J Meet Me on the Dance Floor
Rock musicians will be turning out in full force Aug. 21 for the Second Annual Vegas Rocks! Magazine Awards at which hometown hero Vince Neil will be honored with the Rock and Roll Lifetime Achievement Award. The “Guitar Heroes”-themed event at the Las Vegas Hilton also marks the seventh anniversary of publisher Sally Steele’s Las Vegas-based magazine Vegas Rocks!.
The all-star lineup of other award winners includes John 5 from Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson who will receive the Best Guitarist Award; Wayne Static from Static X who will receive the Best Metal Frontman Performer Award; Steve Stevens from Billy Idol’s band who will be presented with the Legendary Guitarist Award; and Carmine Appice who will receive the Inspirational Drum Icon Award.
Other rockers set for the red carpet include Steven Adler and Gilby Clark (Guns ’n’ Roses); Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead); Sebastian Bach (Skid Row); Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats); Frankie Perez and Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver); Sean McNabb (Dokken); Athena Lee and Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale); plus our friends Zowie Bowie and Otis Day.
*Two bright news items amid the economy’s Monday Meltdown: The 5-acre Fright Dome at Circus Circus created by Jason Egan in 2003 is hiring more than 300 people to continue horrifying Halloween fans. AOL has ranked it one of America’s Top Five haunted attractions. … And as we enter the final months of The Lion King’s run at Mandalay Bay and its final show Dec. 30, hotel execs and producers are offering an incredible promotional package: a two-night stay at the resort and two tickets for the Disney show for $200 from Aug. 31 through Dec. 20, except over Thanksgiving. Use the code “PDisney” at Mandalay Bay’s box office.
*Comedy star Brad Garrett hosted the debut Epic Poker League at the Palms over the weekend with the prize pool going to help victims of the Missouri tornado and players receiving Zappos certificates. Poker pro and celebrity participants included Chad Brown, Vanessa Rousso, Vanessa Selbst, Mike Matusow, Jason Mercier, Huck Seed, Mike Sexton, Carlos Mortensen, Nick Binger, Phil Laak and Jennifer Tilly.
The remaining players -- including Andy Bloch and Who’s Your Daddy chief Dan Fleyshman -- reconvene at the Palms tomorrow for the final table produced by Heartland Poker Tour, with the last three players eliminated yesterday for a Final Nine table. Annie Duke and Jeffrey Pollack are on hand as execs of the new poker league.
*Chef Steve Martorano of Cafe Martorano at the Rio returns for yet another appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! tomorrow. He’ll be promoting his new cookbook Yo Cuz and reveal that his amazing life story is being turned into a movie script. Steve tells me that the writers have reached the halfway point.
*A 10-event boxing series is to debut this October and run through next summer at the Riviera thanks to legendary fight promoter Sterling McPherson, who says the bouts will be televised on ESPN International starting Oct. 15. Sterling managed such world-class talent as Francois Botha, Keith Holmes, Michael Dokes and Mike Tyson. Boxing Hall of Fame broadcaster “Col.” Bob Sheridan and James “Buster” Douglas will provide commentary.
*Regular MGM Resorts visitors Mike and Cheryl Mendez from Scottsdale, Ariz., as members of the loyalty club M Life, were the lucky couple chosen to name the newborn bottlenose dolphin calf born at Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. The baby was born July 3 to mother Duchess and over the weekend was given the name K2 after the charity K2 Adventurers.
*The tween market of star singers has exploded in recent months, and Las Vegas wiz kid Elijah J, 12, who starred as Young Simba in The Lion King on the national tour and at Mandalay Bay and was a standout at a Michael Jackson tribute at the Palms, has a video for his new release “Meet Me on the Dance Floor.
“It’s a fun song for kids that adults can jam to, as well,” Elijah told me. “I had a great time filming it, and I got a chance to showcase some of my original dance skills. I’m hoping it is a song everyone will want to party to!” Last year, Elijah’s debut single and video “Let Me Do My Thang” received more than 100,000 views in its first few weeks on YouTube.
Kill Devil Hill -- Vinnie Appice, Rex Brown, Mark Zavon and Dewey Bragg -- perform in a free concert at Crown Nightclub at the Rio. Next week is Afroman. … Santana’s lead singer Andy Vargas plays DJ at the Hard Rock Hotel’s pool party Relax. … Palms mogul George Maloof donates the $100 cabana charge at his Palms Pool & Bungalows to teen charity Vegas Street. … Twenty people will win an all-expenses-paid trip to San Diego if they turn up with the largest industry group at Jet in the Mirage. … And the eight-man Funk Art is at Book & Stage at the Cosmopolitan.
