I am saddened to think that the Owners and Contractors probably spent more money attending incident review meetings, than were the actual value of the fines. There must be a better way to get a stronger message to the proforming contractors than the relatively minor fines that were levied. What kind of attention was drawn by other contractors on the strip by a $18,900 fine for three violations related to the death of an employee? To you and me that's alot, but I'd bet it's closer to ONE day's profit for the steel erector than you think. Safety needs to become a serious business proposition to motivate these contractors to take the correct actions in fostering safe work cultures.
