10 Ways to Build the Literary Scene in Vegas
1) Visit the bookstores—especially the independents
2) Get your library card—and use it
3) Don’t forget the kids—you can’t expect them to read if you don’t model the behavior.
4) Attend the readings and programs offered at the library—and
5) the wonderful programs sponsored by UNLV & CSN, the Black Mountain Institute and other local bastions of lucidity and literature
6) Attend the Book Festival or participate in “The Big Read”—lack of participation is the only thing that keeps our scene ‘ down’
7) Support local publications and local writers—read them, buy them, check them out and talk them up
8) Patronize the establishments that sponsor local readings—the cup of coffee you buy may be pendulum that swings a budding writer to the next level
9) Talk about what you’re reading with friend or co-workers—it’s as valid as talking about a TV show, for goodness sake!
10) Read—and keep reading, because a mind really shouldn’t subsist on a diet of TV sit-coms and sports alone.
