"If you choose not to choose, you still make a choice," Burns said.
Isn't that a line from a Rush song? Is that where Burns got his training in politics, from Geddy Lee? Oh wait, I get it - Rush, like Rush Limbaugh. Now I understand.
Hey Mikey, I have an idea. Why don't you and the other 20 percent of the state that still supports Gibbons and his radical anarchist ideology go start an anarchy commune in Elko. You could put up a huge fence to keep all of the "leftists" and minorities out, and keep all of your money in. That way, you could have a colony where no government services exists, only corporations. You would have plenty of stores, restaurants and individuals selling widgets, without those pesky roads, sewage treatment plants, electrical grids, libraries, schools, telephone lines, etc. At least you wouldn't have to deal with those lazy government workers and welfare recipients that cause so many problems out here in the real world. Good luck!
I have one for you - One resorts to quoting others when one lacks original thought.
Liberal this, libs that. Do any of you even know what the word liberal means?
Harley, if you were Governor we would all need guns and survival supplies for the inevitable anarchy that would arise as a result of statewide collapse. You might be a step up from Gibbons though.
If Gibbons runs again I'll vote for him and hope he wins. It will be a good experiment to see how horribly wrong things can go in a state when the reckless irresponsibility of such an ideaology is put to practice. Las Vegas is already an experiment in social and economic Darwinism, so why not?
Thanks for all the right wing cliches Houston, real helpful. Please, if I hear one more conservadittohead spout out California as an example I'm going to plunge a pencil in my ears. California has a poplulation of 38 million people. Their problems are far more complex than our little cow-town state. The situations are not even close or comparable. Why don't you look at states like MN or WA and get back to us.
Interesting that there are some Gibbons supporters posting comments. Congratulations, you are part of the twenty percent that approve of his job. Twenty percent of adults also have herpes. I'm not suggesting the two are related, but it is an interesting coincidence.
But seriously, I am sure on some level his stand against raising taxes (hypocritical as it is considering the room tax in his budget and his insistence on defacto tax raises on public workers through pay cuts) is appealing to some segments of the population, so I guess I can understand that some people would approve of his job. I try to rationalize how it is possible, but it is difficult though. It's like trying to figure out why some people still have mullets. The only conclusion I can come to is that they want to be all business up front and still be able to party in the back.
Patrick, there are simply too many contradictions in what you are saying now, that I do not have the time to list them all. Your interesting statement about this hypothetical time in the future when the private sector will take care of everything rendering government obsolete is troubling on so many levels. We did have a time like that in America, it was the industrial revolution. Remember when our federal government was small and regulations of big business did not exist? It was great - no child labor laws, no limits to the work week, no health codes, no safety or environmental controls, etc. That would be terrific if we could bring all that back! Your argument has been rendered moot by history, please study it.
I will also take a moment to focus on one other thought of yours in particular though - your point about the 215. The only way that it could be "privatized" is through the use of tolls. That contradicts your very idea of freedom, because now you have restricted use to only those who can afford to pay the ultimately numerous tolls that would be levied for travel on the highway. What is the difference between paying more taxes to build such roads, and paying continuous tolls to use them? You arrive at the same point of which you disdain, someone taking your money. I'll try to come back to some other points later, but I have to work in my private sector job now.
