I live in Arizona. Jim Gibbons has the right idea. Illegal immigration has to be eliminated, not curbed, eliminated. If not, any reform will be meaningless, just like the amnesty program under the Reagan administration.
There is only one way that the flow of illegal immigrants into the US can be stopped. That is the construction of an impenetrable border fence. To protect its citizens, Israel constructed a security fence. The US should hire the Israelis as consultants to build an effective fence on our southern border.
Arizona's school system is in shambles. Some districts have student populations that are 40%illegal. Our healthcare system is overburdened. Many health facilities have closed their doors. Many times, I do not feel safe in Arizona. I could go on and on. The end game is here. I do not believe that the Obama administration will interfere with Arizona's law. There is too much sentiment across the entire country for tight immigration policies. Obama is a fence sitter. He will alienate both sides for inaction. For a spineless President, this is a no win situation.
Latinos are attempting financial boycotts against Arizona. Why punish innocent business owners who employ Latinos? Do they think our Governor is going to cave? Boycotts will only create resentment toward Latinos. What if all Anglos boycotted businesses owned by Latinos?
Give me a fence.
I am a Phoenix resident. Here is what happens when an undocumented person is the cause of a traffic accident with me. The police ask for a drivers license. They don't have one. The police ask for proof of auto insurance. They don't have any. The police give them a ticket for the violations and tell them to have a nice day. Crime has dropped dramatically in Arizona for 2 reasons and it's not good police work. The collapse of the housing market and strict enforcement of immigration law by our county sheriff. In reading some of these comments I came to realize that immigration reform itself would be racist as it would be pointed toward one group of people. My state can no longer provide public funds to people who do not contribute to the economy. The government wants to cut the social security of people who contributed to the system their whole lives while giving free assistance in Medicaid to non-citizens. That is shameful.
I have been a Phoenix resident for the past 32 years. I have been twice hit by illegals in traffic accidents. My auto and health insurance costs are abnormally high due to illegals. My city's police force is overburdened with crime due to illegals. When I am in the checkout line at the grocery store, often there is an illegal in line getting food stamp food for her anchor baby. I pay for all this stuff. The author of this article TOTALLY misses the point. Sheriff Arpaio is saving Maricopa County residents enormous amounts of money by calling media attention to his roundups. The media attention is scaring many, many illegals into moving out of Maricopa county. With a few actions, the sheriff gets big results. "Civil rights advocates say the areas they hit seem to always be poor, Hispanic areas." I love that line from the article. Should the sheriff be going to Swedish neighborhoods? I hope all of the illegals fleeing Maricopa County end up in Clark County. Residents there will be begging Sheriff Joe to run for office.

Our society has become technology and skill oriented. We have a vast numbers of citizens who have no skills or education. Our 20 year, phony economic boom provided work for those individuals in real estate, lending, all sorts of sales and so forth. Many never saw the need for education. They lived phony lives like kings due to credit without boundaries. Now our economy has eliminated the fat and left those without skills or education jobless. Unless these people become trained in some valuable skill, they will remain unemployed. Here comes the government wanting you and me to pay for these people. Worse yet, under the guise of emergency spending, the Federal government adds pork and unrelated spending to extend unemployment benefits. The deficit is increased. These people need training and education to become contributing members of our society. Spend the money on development of skills and education that will benefit all of us in the long term.
