Rwolf's suggestion is supported by the legal theory of causation. Can a casino foresee gambling losses by patrons and the resultant ripple effect in a community? If so, a casino perpetrates a "social harm".
I, too, consider good pizza to be a more serious topic than Sarah Palin.
Don't think the Department of Justice wouldn't like to flex some muscle and file a conspiracy in the restraint of trade suit in federal court naming both Harrah's and MGM as codefendants. Especially if it means staying in Las Vegas for the duration of the litigation.
If only the skilled investigative work behind the apprehension of the 5 suspects could prevent this from happening again . . . What caused the 5 to do this? That is what needs to be investigated as well. Condolences to the Nettleton Family.
Casino gambling is great, but NEVER have I walked through the front doors wondering how everything in the casino is paid for. I'll help pay for a small amount of the electric bill, but that's it!
All three suspects, if convicted, appear to be death penalty-qualified. It is a social interest to incapacitate these three, and deter anyone else from perpetrating violence upon a police officer. However, while exceptionally courageous, the law enforcement profession is not above reproach when it comes to violence. I pray for the Nettleton Family during this time of grief.
The Owl Club "hotel and casino" up in Battle Mountain has been around for a century. It, too, doesn't exactly make a killing.
Avery obviously offers little to society, but the scenario nevertheless is riddled with legal problems. If Avery is a "pimp" every one of the women are accomplices (as well as eyewitness informants??). Further, one of his women was his legal wife. Avery can argue that his wife is guilty of adultery, fornication, and prostitution, and, that he is a total victim here. "Pimping" is a very vague legal term, that's why the DA is shooting for "transporting of minors . . . for sex."
Betcha any money the Mormon plaintiffs were getting under the skin of the locals. I've lived in Utah long enough to know . . . Maybe they got what was coming to them . . .

The vengeful, violent comments above that are directed at these boys are barely distinguished from the awfulness of the crime they committed. These are immature, ignorant boys brought up in a culture which celebrates violence of any kind. If you punish them, wouldn't you also have to indict the culture which taught them how to rob and kill? They weren't born to kill - they were taught.
Cara, would you please be cognizant of your stereotyping.
