In the days before sprinkler systems there was a need for firemen and the system of shifts, training, etc we have now but we no longer need the fireman of old. NOW we need professional paramedics (not firemen parading as them) who work normal shifts and get paid according to their market value not a bunch of lazy firemen sitting around, sleeping, shopping, eating on the taxpayer dime while they wait for the occasional fire.
There is plenty of waste to be found in the CCSD that will not effect your child's education. I think it is time that we wake up and realize that the most important person in the school system is the teacher. All other positions should be there to support teacher's in their quest to educate your child. Teacher's should be the highest paid person in the system and those who teach core classes paid even more. Extra curricular activities are very nice but they are not central to the purpose of your school. Your school is to EDUCATE your children in the basic skills they will need to become productive members of society.
All programs outside of the classroom should be open to scrutiny. Parents who feel their children need a specific program to succeed must then take the financial responsibility for funding (football, band, etc.) These are programs not open to all students so therefore not all students are able to participate in equal measure in the funding.
The long term resolution of our current crisis is going to rely on an educated work force. We will need literate workers competent in math with extensive computer skills and yet we are asking for an across the board cut in teacher's salaries? I think we need to take a look at our priorities and start cutting programs not essential to the country's long term growth like music (private lessons, anyone) and sports programs.

And the prices will continue to drop as contracted workers lose their jobs and head to wherever it was they once came from. The immoral bankers who lent money for homes to people without ever checking the home buyer's ability to pay the mortgage should be taken to the desert and left there.
