Take ONE hit from any UNLV football player and survive it ...?
That would require a UNLV football to actually HIT someone.
Not going to happen anytime soon.
The choice should not be presented to Allen, or anyone else, as a choice between "academics" (Stanford) or "basketball" (UNLV).
Stanford is a world class academic institution, and UNLV is not at Stanford's level academically. Few schools are.
But that doesn't mean that by choosing UNLV, Allen will not be getting an education, and will only be playing basketball.
The opportunities at UNLV may not compare to the opportunities at Stanford, but he can get a very good education at UNLV. Not of the same caliber as Stanford necessarily, but good nonetheless.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays didn't seem to hurt Boise State any, not as much as playing to a wide national audience on ESPN helped their program.
If BSU can do it, why can't UNLV?
Rice is paid less than the average football player at Ohio St. or USC.
Rice should get a huge bonus if he lands Shabazz! :0
What would it take to get me to buy tickets?
3 things:
A team that is not a total embarrassment to the university, the fans and the alumni.
And some strict enforcement of behavior codes once fans are inside the stadium so that those of who came to watch a football game are not bombarded all game long by f-bombs from drunk teenagers who came only to scream profanities and drink cheap beer.
A paved parking lot.
Let it go already people! The search wasn't handled properly. It NEVER is with Maryland Pkwy. They always bungle it.
Rice was the guy from the moment Kruger left, and probably even before then. Why they can't come right out and say that and avoid another embarrassing mess for the university, I dont know, but it's over.
Rice deserves this opportunity and our full support. Let's put the feuds and flame wars behind us and move on.
Here's a better plan ...
Why not privatize UNLV (and maybe Reno also) and let it operate as a scaled down university with a focus on research, scholarship and graduate education focused on keeping the best Nevada students in Nevada.
The public funds saved by scaling UNLV down to a small private school could be used for two purposes: reducing state funding to higher education to meet the governor's goals, and transitioning the Community College of Southern Nevada into a public college/university with a focus on educating undergraduates and granting 4 year degrees.
CSN and UNLV are basically serving the same functions right now, educating undergraduates.
All this does is duplicate costs and effort.
So get the kids who are not going on to graduate school (but still want a 4 year degree with some prestige) out of UNLV.
Shrink UNLV. Expand CSN. Let CSN focus on educating undergrads. Let UNLV focus on educating the best of the best undergrads, and master's and doctoral students.
I'm not familiar with Northern Nevada, but would assume the same approach would probably work in the north.
So ...
NHSE needs $163 million in annual cuts to stay within budget ...
And ...
The Professor proposes a plan that would save $50 million annually????
And the other $110 million comes from ... where exactly??
If 4 institutions serve 90% of the students, they probably account for 90% of the operating costs, and hence should bear roughly 90% of the required cuts.
It's simply illogical to think that closing 5 institutions accounting for 10% of the students and operating costs could somehow make up for a 30% shortfall in the budget.
Maybe he should stick to the biology lab?
"smaller, more expensive, more selective institution"
Isn't that exactly what UNLV SHOULD BE??!!
Works for our Little Sister Up North, doesn't it?
