I can't believe the way this officer is being persecuted. This is one of the ugliest representations of Nevada I've heard in a long time. What's the matter with that DA? Why doesn't he just join AA, get on with his life, and stop harassing people who call him on what he does? I'm beginning to wonder if there's also racism involved...
FYI: Mormons, as we know them today, and those who practice plural marriage are not the same any more. (Harry Reid coverted to Mormonisn much after the church stopped recognizing plural marriage.) The FLDS is only one group that practices plural marriage up in the Hildale/Colorado City area and throughout the world. Across the highway is a completely different group that follows a different leader. This group left the FLDS back in the '80's, because the people didn't like some of the practices. Despite the fact that I originally went up there to cover news, I have now made friends up there and find many of the people to be absolutely lovely, warm, and open. You should see how well-behaved and helpful their children are! You may surprised to know that many of the people up there travel a lot, particularly all over the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. You may not even realize that many folks who practice plural marriage (many very happily) may very well have other residences in your very neighborhood! They may even be building your home and/or selling you real estate. :) Although it has been popular in recent years to focus on the areas of poverty up there, that would be like saying that Watts is representative of all of Los Angeles. There are some gorgeous mansions up there owned by some very wealthy people. I especially admire the community days, set up by the church, in which the men get together every few weeks and work on sidewalks, build each others' homes, and so forth while the women cook and provide lunch for the work crews. The men earn points by working that get their own projects done by the community. They save a lot of money on labor this way. The boys grow up in construction, and many have successful businesses, or work for them, later that stem from this. Incidentally, I have been in homes with 5 wives and more. It's amazing to see how they all help each other. Their lives are, in many ways, much easier and more efficient than those of our supposedly "modern" women, ie. somebody is taking care of the kids, someone else is cooking, another is cleaning, etc. Some of these women even work in the outside communities. Just a quick snapshot of aspects up there that folks who are only focused on the multiple wives don't "get".
I'll tell you what kind of man: An idiot with an undeserved and humongous sense of entitlement, and his parents should be ashamed for not telling their boy that he made his bed, so to speak, so now lie in it. However, it isn't just politicians. Now Letterman figures it was a fabulous idea to drag his wife's name (not to mention that of their child) through the national mud by publicizing his indiscretions on his network show! Why? Because he thought the public would appreciate that he's trying to avoid having to pay off somebody. Holy Jeez! What the heck is the matter with these schmucks??? Is money the only thing that motivates them? And what in the world is the matter with US that makes us continue to discuss their smutty lives? Impeach! Change the channel! Do whatever it takes to drop these sleazes off our radar.
Now we know why what happens in Vegas stays here; it can't figure out how to turn around and get out.
Not only is Ron not a jerk, he's one of the kindest, most generous people out there. As a news colleague of Ron's for some 25 years, all that I can think of is that the accident may have happened because Ron works way too much and way too hard to support his family. He was undoubtedly exhausted when it happened. Although I don't know the details of the accident, I believe that letting Ron go from his job was far too harsh.

Why are we not being told the whole truth about why we needed to redo the convention? Not only were ballot boxes missing, but many people I spoke with on Saturday said that several of those boxes were found in the bathrooms where someone had been changing votes on our first alignment tickets! That's voter fraud!
It gets worse: Both, the Obama and Clinton campaigns duped us: I support Clinton, but after being told during our respective caucus periods that most of the disenfranchised voters were Hillary supporters, I was very surprised when the Obama folks supported the previously denied Motion during the second vote, too. As we were leaving, I asked a number of Obama supporters if they had been told that most of those who were turned away were their supporters. Surprise, surprise! They had been told the same darn thing in their caucus that we had. Why are we being played for fools? Tell us the truth! We deserve to know. And don't shove a cover-up down our throats. Some of us remember only too well who did that to us the last time. Democrats should not follow that lead.

Absolutely loved your column! Even those of us who didn't grow up here but have spent many, many years here remember the places you have mentioned. What a great trip through the memories. Don't stop writing, doc!
