Actually the officers who participate in this are off duty, volunteering their own time. The officers who are on duty handle the calls for service from citizens. Metro has been doing this for at least 20 years. It started as Shop with a Cop back in the 80's.

As a retired member of Metro my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Officer Nettleton. His loss will be felt for a long time. However, I believe that parading him down the Las Vegas Strip was inappropriate and only done as a form of political theater for the benefit of a Sheriff who wants to be re-elected and get the "More Cops" initiative restarted. It is unfortunate that the Sheriff cares more for his image than he does for the living members of the department who have to fight him for benefits guaranteed under the Nevada Heart & Lung bill because his quack, Doctor Heck who has no clinical background in cardiac medicine, denies coverage because he doesn't like a particular MRI to prove the existence of advanced cardiac disease. Sheriff Gillespie it's time to prove you truly care for your employees and quit making them take you to court for benefits you know they have earned.

My daughter started Drivers Ed at Northwest Career and Tecnical Academy this fall. Within 3 weeks the course was cancelled and turned into a PE class. So now I get to spend money on one of those expensive outside courses the article speaks of. I would have paid CCSD to continue the class but of course I was never asked.

It's not like the firefighters here actually fight fires as they do back east. Here they surround and drown to prevent the fire from spreading to a neighboring structure. All they ever save is the foundation. They are just great at PR with their talk of how valiant they are and how nobody can do their job. Yet whenever they announce they are hiring they have thousand of applicants to choose from.

Here's an idea..fire fighters spend 24 hours on duty and most of that time is spent sitting around the fire house waiting for a call. Why not put these prima donnas out doing construction projects for the county and charitable organizations when they are not actively engaged in fighting a fire. Most of them have side jobs doing construction work. If we are going to pay them big bucks...let's get all we can out of them instead of letting them sit around on our dime eating and planning what jobs they will take on their numerous days off. I'd love to have a job where I work 9 days a month and make over $100,000.00 per year.
