Hi nurse411 - thanks for your comment on my story. You're right, this story, and my story on Oct. 29, are "one sided," as you say. That's because this facility is not calling me back to tell me their side of the story. I have urged them to call me back, because they really do owe the community an explanation. Hopefully they will do so soon.

Hi rejco100 - thanks for your comment on my story. I always appreciate people getting into the dialogue, but must disagree with your comment about "make-believe addictions." Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point, but let me emphasize that no one credible in the scientific or medical community would say that addiction is "make-believe." There's debate about how many people actually become addicted, but it's scientifically established that some substances alter the chemical make-up of the brain and "hijack" a person's ability to control their substance abuse. To say otherwise is woefully ignorant. Also, let me point out that there are established medical standards for how doctors prescribe controlled substances -- precisely because they are potentially dangerous and addictive.

I'm working on a story about the Boulder City police traffic enforcement, based on an unusual experience I had there recently. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has had a first-hand experience they'd like to share. I can be reached at marshall.allen@lasvegassun.com, or at 259-2330.

Hi fosimmons, thanks for your comment on my story. You're question is one that's been raised by many other people, and it's certainly a big controversy. Most epileptics don't suffer from seizures because they're controlled by medication, so the law allows them to drive. When they do have a seizure they lose their license for at least 90 days, and until the seizures are considered under control. In Chris's case, the seizures got progressively worse and increasingly common. At a certain point, he stopped driving until he had his brain surgery.

Hi Omnilpoj - thanks for commenting on my story.

To answer your question: I heard about this story by talking to people in the medical community. A defamation suit that's lasted four years does have people talking, as you can imagine.

It was my idea to write the story. So I contacted Sharda and Kaushal for comment. Sharda talked to me. Kaushal declined - though I'd still like to hear from him. I hope that helps clarify things for you.
