PainDoc and PatientAdvocate -
The above editorial was written by the Sun's opinion section. But we wanted to respond since you are calling our reporting into question.
The numbers about prescription narcotic use in Nevada came from the Drug Enforcement Administration, and so far no one has questioned the accuracy of our analysis or our stories. In fact, we've received praise for their fairness and accuracy from a host of medical authorities and patients, from here in Las Vegas and nationally.
You clearly have a keen interest in our stories and are free to contact us directly if you have any questions or concerns.

Hi Carolyn, thank you for your feedback on the story. I just wanted to mention that it's highly disputed, and unknown, how many patients become addicted to narcotic painkillers. In all our research, however, we never heard anyone estimate as low as two percent. Most estimates were around 10 percent, though the range we found was from three percent to 18 percent.
But again -- no one really knows.

The Sun
Locally owned and independent for more than 50 years.

Hey there, casinokid. I write about health care for the Sun but covered the cops beat for years at newspapers in Los Angeles. My experience is that the police send out press releases to the media announcing when and where they'll be doing their DUI check points. They want the media to let people know about them in advance, as well as cover the events. This way the "show of force" by law enforcement at the checkpoint will extend far beyond that single location, warning other people not to drive under the influence. The press coverage maximizes the DUI prevention efforts.
