This whole legislation is part of Sandoval's plan to bust the teacher's union. It smells like Michelle Rhee is involved. Reduced opportunity for tenure, means no tenure. More expensive teachers will be forced out, and young teachers will never receive tenure. What will happen is that they will be "laid off" at the point of tenure eligibility and "rehired" at the beginning of the next school year. This has been done in other states and it has finally made its way to Nevada.

It is easy to figure out why Nevadans want to out Sen. Reid. The words of Sen. Benson said during the 1988 election come to mind "I knew Jack Kennedy (Bob Dole), and you Senator are no Jack Kennedy (Bob Dole). Senator Reid is no Bob Dole. Yes, there is such a thing as lousy leadership. I look at what has happened to our Nevada economy since 2006, when Reid and Palosi took over leadership of both Houses of Congress. How can anyone blame all of this mess on the Bush administration when these two have been in control of all legislation for the past 4 years?

I agree that Reid is at least partly to blame for this. Remember the congress has been lead by the Democrats for the past 4 years and look what has happened to the economy since 2006! I know there are other underling factors, but the entire country has to be back on its financial feet before we will feel any improvement here.

The subject of the piece is outstanding - great tribute to Kenny Guinn. I was one of those teachers re-assigned to another school, grade....etc..because the budget had not been agreed to and was waiting anxiously to find out what my future would hold. I have appreciated Gov. Guinn's willingness to stand down Bob Beers. But Jon why the jab at Bush 41??? I believe history will show that he was a very even-tempered, thoughtful President and we were fortunate to have him at the helm during the Gulf War. Stay on topic Jon, keep Bush and Clinton out of arena!

This is a big job and a huge budget to have control over. It seems like there should be some minimal requirements to run for the school board.
In response to the year round school comment. I have seen some data that shows the schools, especially the older ones are not cost effective during the summer. The older designs with the doors opening outside are not condusive to summer air conditioning and maintanance. Even the new designs cost a lot to maintain in the summer. I think the Board made the right decision on that one. As a parent who had kids in year round elementary school and middle school and high school at the same time, it was not aimable to family life.

I think this supports my opinion that Reid used to have Nevada's best interests at heart. Things have changed a lot since since first term.

First of all, my deepest sympathies to the family of Erik Scott. As a long time resident of LV and also having friends and family members on the force currently, and some retired, I HOPE we have an honest and complete review. The family deserves it and the community and other officers deserve it.

This is nice, but it won't make any difference overall. I am not sure anything will help at this point, Clark county area is in such a hole I am not sure it is coming out during my lifetime. The recent TIME magazine article about bankrupt states lists Nevada as the state with the largest deficit based on percentage to taxable income. Where were our fearless leaders 3 years ago when this thing started to melt down? All of our current elected officials except Titus were exactly where they are now doing exactly what they are doing now - Nothing.

I am just so sorry for these families. I raised my kids in this town and worried every night they were out driving that something like this would happen. What is even sadder is that there are obviously community members who are quick to judge and slow to comfort.

I wish howdydostu would explain with some details what Dinah Titus has done to earn his support. I voted for her, and I think she has a good value system, but frankly I haven't been able to pinpoint anything worthwhile she has done for the Nevada. My personal belief is that she has been strong-armed by Polosi and the ruling "elite" in Washington and has been unable to make much impact at all. Perhaps this is the fate of all new congress people. But I think that is part of what the "Tea Party" folks are trying to express: frustation that we have developed a ruling class in Washington who have no regard for the people they supposedly represent.
