"This shouldn't be a hard concept to grasp: Cut the debt with a combination of tax increases and spending cuts. To this point, proposals that include that combination have been shot down."

It should be easy to grasp the reality that our government does not need more money. That's just not the problem. Excessive spending is how we got here. We need to reverse that. Period.

Well Carolyn. You and your fellow liberals still think the problem in D.C. is a lack of revenue.

And now you'd like us to believe the Constitution bans members of congress from promising to act responsibly.

There's liberalism and then there's reality.

VidiVeritas - You told just the portion of the story that suits you - that's called spinning. Then you accused others of spreading misinformation ???

> Ronald Reagan's First Term -- $656 billion increase

> Ronald Reagan's Second Term -- $1.036 trillion increase

> George H.W. Bush's Term -- $1.587 trillion increase

> Bill Clinton's First Term -- $1.122 trillion increase

> Bill Clinton's Second Term -- $418 billion increase

> George W. Bush's First Term -- $1.885 trillion increase

> George W. Bush's Second Term -- $3.014 trillion increase

> Barack Obama's First "Year" -- $1.573 trillion increase

To summarize, the National Debt increased by huge amounts under each of these presidents. The largest increase for a complete term occurred during George W. Bush's second term. The largest increase during a single year occurred during Barack Obama's first year.

So you prefer that huge additional debt be piled on us by one party rather than the other? Bashing Republicans may be justified, but are you trying to convince us that Democrats have been more fiscally responsible? Or, just what is your point?

"Kennedy was haunted by that tragic accident, and he spent his entire life trying to do right for the working class, the elderly, the handicapped, the poor."

If his extreme liberalism isn't bad enough, how about alcoholism, philandering, waitress sandwiches???

Yes he spent his life trying to do right. And what planet are you from?

How dare they attempt to rein in government spending and get the debt under control!!! I can't believe these people would go to D.C. and try to fix things.

Those arrogant jerks need to be taking lessons from our hero, Harry Reid. Spend more - a lot more, and get that debt ceiling higher and higher - and for goodness sake, raise taxes!

So it's no secret about how the necessary information came to be available - enhanced interrogation techniques (waterboarding) done to prisoners that Obama and Holder wanted to bring here for civilian trials, taken from prisons Obama demanded be closed. Then you want to give Obama credit??? If anything, Obama and his crew owe G.W. Bush a big apology.

Obama was given no choice. He was told that the time is now and if he didn't act, the fact that he passed up the opportunity would be leaked to the public at just the right time (before the election.)

Obama and Holder wanted to impose criminal charges against Bush for committing acts they now use in their favor and pat themselves on the back. Give me a break!

Waterboarding a terrorist is unacceptable but shooting a terrorist in the head is just fine.

Liberals/hypocrites - hypocrites/liberals - the words are interchangeable.

I believe the biggest problem with health care reform is that the bill lacks permanent, guaranteed funding for the Cowboy Poetry Festival in Elko.

Hey fosimmons - "Ola. Just look at the blood on the ground alone from the Afg. and Iraq wars ... now civilians are estimated to have died at 1 millions there - it's just insane anyone voting for this wild, out of control party."

Maybe you can show me where the Dems have voted to de-fund the wars.

And perhaps you were out of town for the weekend. Obama has been bombing Libya.

Go ahead and say it - that's Bush's fault too.

Do you need to score below 12 on an IQ test to become a liberal?

I agree the country needs to get it's act together.

Secure our borders first. Then start massive cutting of unnecessary programs and government waste. In general, start thinking about what is sustainable. Anything that grows the government and the people's dependency on government is a step towards unsustainability.

And legislation should only be enacted with a consciousness of what the Founding Fathers envisioned - individual liberties, personal accountability, a non-intrusive federal government, NO national debt, public servants who came and did their job for the honor that service provided and the gratitude of the citizens, etc.

Liberalism, by definition, is a path toward destruction of our nation.
