Congratulations! This will bring great opportunities for both Zappos and Amazon!
Gov. Gibbons is RETARDED. He should respect the office of the President regardless of who holds office and should be mature enough to meet with him regardless of any differences.
The local economy was failing even before Obama made his 'Vegas' comment. I think Gov. Gibbons is attempting to distract people...the real issue is politicians in this state are not encouraging or focusing in bringing any NEW industries to this state.
It isn't only those who purchased homes w/ no money down or no proof of income who are walking away/foreclosing on homes. There are so many who qualified for their mortgage initially but due to current economic situations (layoffs of one or both owners) can no longer keep up with the payment. I think we've seen the bulk of foreclosures from investor-purchased homes but the next wave is going to be all of the foreclosures from "PRIME" mortgage holders who can no longer afford the payment or who are simply walking away because of how tremendously underwater they are.
It can be really disheartening driving around Las Vegas....a lot of abandoned buildings, foreclosures everywhere, dirt lots for sale. I moved here 5 years ago and I'm looking to move back to California. Although, I'm gainfully employed, my husband was laid off. Being in the financial services I expect he'll have a tough time finding something suitable here. Vegas has very low wages. I think stevem comment is right...most people don't have ties to Vegas. There's no reason to stay here if you can't find a job.

Many don't know much about Zappos and unfortunately the 3 outlet stores that used to be open in Vegas did not represent the company very well (which was one of the reasons they were closed). Sales at Zappos continue to grow (albeit at a slower pace than in year's past), but nonetheless still a growing e-tailer posting year over year profit. The customer base at Zappos is also growing. Currently 70% percent of their sales are from repeat customers, which speaks volumes of their customer service & means there's a lot of untapped potential. Both Amazon and Zappos are still actively hiring and this acquisition will definitely turn out to be a positive for both companies and hopefully for Vegas. Folks in Las Vegas should be ecstatic to have an industry other than casinos/hotels and construction supporting the local econonmy.
