I can understand how frustrating and confusing the new laws can be. But I would like you to hear from the parent of a victim. Actually two very young victims.
A teenage school friend of my son molested both of my young (under 9) daughters. This was not a case of kids playing "doctor"; it was premeditated and he waited for an opportunity to get them alone. He admitted to molesting them, was convicted and put on probation. I found out later that he had previously molested another little girl, but the police didn't have sufficient evidence to charge him at that time.
But what is so tragic it that this young man's father is a pastor and allows him contact with young, vulnerable children on a consistent basis.
You have no idea of the hurt, anger, and guilt that our family has gone through. Hurt that someone my son thought a friend and trusted would molest his little sisters. Anger that this boy's mother was the one who called me and asked if he could come over to our house to hang out when she knew of the previous incident and that I had two little girls. But most of all, horrible guilt that I let this wolf into our home, a place where your children should be safe.
I think that the law should not be a sweeping blanket that treats all offenders the same, but takes into consideration the circumstances and the type of offense.. I hope and pray that this teenage predator gets help for his sickness. But most of all, I pray that he never has the opportunity to molest another child.
